Significant resources in our society focus on helping survivors remain safe in, or escape from, abusive relationships. This work is sorely needed and should continue.
Despite decades of working with survivors in this fashion, however, the occurrence of intimate partner abuse has not lessened. Indeed, COVID exacerbated the problem.
What is needed is intimate partner abuse PREVENTION. The time is now. Our society cannot afford not to vastly reduce this problem; and from a morality standpoint, allowing it to continue is plain wrong. Education is the solution — via K-12 curriculum and social media.
This initiative aims to reduce the instances of intimate partner abuse in Hawai‘i by incorporating prevention education into the sexual violence curriculum being deployed in Hawai‘i schools and by deploying similar messaging through social media.
