Colorful Changes to Kaimuki to Create a Sense of Community

Making the most of limited space, an Oahu community changes its look to encourage people to come back to Kaimuki. Because of the pandemic, there isn't as much foot-traffic for businesses along Waialae Avenue.
Meanwhile traffic on the normally busy street has dropped as well. So, the community turned parking spaces into parklets with outdoor seating, in the hopes they will help bring people out once again.

A parklet along Waialae and 12th Avenues is the second parklet built by Re-Use Hawaii.
Workers re-used lumber from the former Ward Warehouse to create the seating area.

"Some people can't see the potential of the material in our lumber yard, so this shows you all the creative things you can do with salvaged material," stated Quinn Vittum, Re-Use Hawaii's Executive Director.
