Fellows mentioned in this story: Jeff Mikulina

From KHON2:

In this episode of Empowered Hawai‘i, hosts Jeff Mikulina and Kelly Simek explore the pivotal issue of transportation in Hawai‘i, spotlighting the landmark case of Navahine v. Hawai‘i, where 14 young people filed a constitutional climate lawsuit against the State of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, seeking to enforce environmental protections. The youth plaintiffs are ensuring the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation follows through the legal mandate of decarbonizing Hawai‘i’s economy and achieve a zero emissions economy by 2045.

First, Jeff and Kelly have an in-depth conversation with youth plaintiff Rylee Brooke Kamahele. Rylee shares her personal journey and motivations behind her involvement in the case, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable transportation solutions in Hawai‘i.

Next, Jeff and Kelly speak with Leināʻala Ley, Senior Associate Attorney at Earthjustice. Leināʻala explains the broader environmental and legal importance of Navahine v. Hawai‘i, highlighting how the settlement could pave the way for more environmentally responsible transportation policies. Her insights shed light on the critical role legal advocacy plays in driving systemic change.

Kelly then speaks with Ed Sniffen, Director of the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, to discuss the state’s response to the settlement. Ed outlines the concrete steps Hawai‘i will take to adhere to the new guidelines, offering a glimpse into the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation development.

Finally, Jeff talks with Michael Replogle, former Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation. Michael shares his expertise and expresses Hawai‘i’s need to prioritize climate change when selecting projects and dedicating funds, which it has not been doing to date. Michael also offers valuable lessons from large urban centers that Hawai‘i can adapt to foster a more sustainable transportation future.
