Homeland Security Investigations Report Sex Trafficking in Hawai‘i Worsened during the Pandemic

COVID-19 affected many lives over the past year here in Hawai‘i. The issue of sex trafficking worsened during the pandemic.

John F. Tobon, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations Honolulu, says it's because kids are spending more time online so they've become targets for predators. HSI covers a range of crimes including sex and labor trafficking, child exploitation, financial fraud and cyber security. Because trafficking is victim-centered, Tobon says those cases have priority in the agency. Investigation for human trafficking cases can range from three months to three years because gathering evidence can be difficult and tricky.
