From Pacific Business News:
Rich Matsuda, associate director of external relations at the W. M. Keck Observatory, works on astronomy-related issues atop Maunakea, the world’s tallest mountain from base to summit.
Matsuda grew up in Nu‘uanu on Oahu as the youngest of six children, in what he described as a “lively household.” He attended Punahou School and the University of Washington, later getting a job as a flight controls engineer at Boeing.
In 1993, Matsuda returned to the Islands to join the W. M. Keck Observatory when the Keck II telescope was being constructed.
“Fast forward to today, 29 years later, I’m proud to have been on the team that built one of the most technologically advanced telescopes of our time to produce unparalleled scientific discoveries, including research that led to two Nobel Physics prizes in 2011 and 2020,” Matsuda told Pacific Business News. “Recently, my work has turned toward working with the community and government on the issues surrounding astronomy on Maunakea — work that I’m equally passionate and proud of.”
